Sunland Park, Santa Teresa residents urged to conserve water after well breaks

The Camino Real Regional Utility Authority is urging residents in Sunland Park and Santa Teresa to conserve water until a broken well can be repaired.

CRRUA’s Executive Director Brent Westmoreland tells ABC-7 Well Number Three broke Saturday afternoon. 12 other wells serve the area.

Westmoreland tells ABC-7 a crew from Albuquerque is heading down to repair it and expects the problem to be resolved by Thursday.

“This is very urgent. We are moving forward as quickly as we can to get this well back in service,” Westmoreland said. “We just want to reassure them we’ll have it back up as soon as possible, of course, and we remain dedicated to delivering safe drinking water.”

Westmoreland said about 500 residents in the Tierra Madre and Rio Vista subdivisions are directly affected. All 70,000 residents in Sunland Park need to be on high alert. Santa Teresa residents are also asked to conserve water.

Westmoreland says it is still unclear how the well broke or how much it will cost to repair.
