Police: Woman shot, trapped with children while SWAT standoff unfolded
A woman is in the hospital with a gunshot wound and the alleged shooter is in police custody following an early morning SWAT situation on Friday.
The situation unfolded on the 3800 block of Tierra Alamo Drive just after 1 a.m. when a woman called police to report she had been shot and had locked herself in a bedroom with her two children, ages 10 and 12.
Police identified the alleged shooter as 36-year-old Robert Ruiz. He is charged with Aggravated Assault/Family Violence. Police have not released Ruiz’s mugshot yet because he will not be jailed until he is released from a hospital.
Police say the woman, 34-year-old Janet Dejong, was taken to the hospital after she was shot. Her condition has not been released.
Police said officers were trying to distract Ruiz while other officers rescued Dejong and her two children. Police said Ruiz fired at the officers as they were rescuing the victims. Charges of Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant are also pending against Ruiz, police said.
Ruiz surrendered to police at about 4 a.m.
