Police: Gunman shoots man in vehicle with three children
Police identified the alleged gunman in Wednesday’s shooting on the 4600 block of Maxwell Avenue in Northeast El Paso.
55-year-old Douglas Riley allegedly shot 31-year-old Adrian Nunez in the face and upper torso. Nunez remains in critical condition, police said.
After allegedly shooting Nunez, Riley allegedly fired into the victim’s vehicle. Three young children were inside the vehicle, but were not harmed, police said.
Investigators said there was no provocation for the shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, Riley was still holding the gun, police said. He obeyed the officers’ orders to put down the weapon.
Riley was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under bonds totaling $250,000. He is facing four counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Arturo Rubio lives not far from the scene of the shooting near Maxwell and the Roosevelt Public Housing complex.
“Yeah, it worries you that you could get shot, your grandchildren could get shot. a stray bullet could go anywhere,” Rubio said.
Angelica Ramos is one of Rubio’s many grandchildren who live nearby.
“Do you guys feel safe here? No, no. A lot of things happen here. This is the second time someone has been shot at those apartments,” said the 12-year-old.
Rubio said his neighborhood is riddled with drugs and the crimes that go hand-in-hand. Neighbor Laura Munoz agreed.
“Lately, it has been out of control. Because we have been plenty of shootouts here on Maxwell. It’s not the first time. It’s several times. How does that make you feel, you have kids? Yes, I have three boys. I am actually always outside with them and I do keep an eye on them for the same reason, because I know we are not safe here either,” Munoz said.
Just a week ago, Rubio believes a man tried to kidnap another granddaughter, Miranda.
“This is the second time someone got shot in those apartments. And we found syringes. And they guy who came and tried to take me, I just don’t like living here,” Miranda Ramos said.
For many thought, moving is not an option. All Rubio can do is keep his family even closer.
“Do your kids go out at night? Just to the playground area there. But I can see them from the door,” said Rubio.
