Orientation for students at the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine starts Monday

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine is opening its doors to 162 students Monday.

The 80,000 square foot building took about 18 months to build. It is located at 3501 Arrowhead Drive across the street from Aggie Memorial Stadium.

The school is privately funded and the entire project cost about $105 million.

Administrators hope the school will ultimately bring more doctors to Las Cruces, something the school’s dean says would fill a critical need.

“There’s a very severe shortage of all health care providers and especially physicians here so that’s why we’re here,” Founding Dean George Mychaskiw said.

Mychaskiw gave ABC-7 a tour of the college.

There are exam rooms, laboratories, lecture halls and a student lounge.

In all of the lecture halls there are screens so students can webcast to hospitals and other medical schools around the world.

Orientation starts Monday. Administrators say they’ve already received 3,000 applications for next year.
