Northeast El Paso to see major developments
ABC-7 talked with city officials about what is being done to revitalize Northeast El Paso economically after a viewer emailed the newsroom, complaining about his perceived lack of attention to his side of town.
Coincidentally, city representatives will hold ground-breaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies for two developments in Northeast El Paso this weekend.
Carl Robinson, the city representative for Northeast El Paso, spoke to ABC-7 about ongoing developments.
On Friday, the city of El Paso will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the Northgate Transfer Center.
The new $38 million transit center will serve as a main feeder for the Sun Metro bus terminal in the northeast, and will also include a small retail center and lofts. The project has not been attempted anywhere else in the United States.
“Other parts of the state, and the country as well, will be looking at this one as a model for their respective cities,” said Robinson.
Robinson also touted the newly opened splash park at Sue Young Park on Diana Drive, which has drawn in thousands of people from around the city.
This week, the city will also begin looking at rezoning a vacant lot on Hondo Pass Drive near Gateway North Boulevard to accommodate a hotel.
Robinson pointed to the revamped Cohen Stadium, which has become a venue for concerts and events, as another source for revenue and entertainment.
“We had Music Under the Stars at Cohen Stadium for all the month of June on Sundays,” Robinson said.
Robinson hinted to ABC-7 that Northeast residents will begin seeing more developments soon.
“Northeast El Paso, you have a great place to live. Stay tuned: there are greater things coming,” Robinson said, adding that another retail center and dog park are in the works.
The city announced in a news release that it is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Logan Park at 5500 Byron Street, north of Fred Wilson Avenue in the northeast, to unveil improvements to the park. The ceremony will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.
