Community pulls together to raise money for slain officer’s family

Local businesses in Las Cruces are pulling together to help the family of fallen Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.

On Saturday, Southern New Mexico Speedway is holding a fundraiser at the track. EMT, firefighters, police officers, or anyone with a badge is invited in for free. Gates open at 5:30 and races start at 7:45.

House of Graphics on 800 W. Amador is selling decals to raise money for the family.

As of Thursday, the store had already sold $5,000 dollars worth of the stickers. The store’s owner says all money will go directly to Chavez’s memorial fund.

On Friday, the NMSU football team will play a charity game with local law enforcement. It’s at 7 p.m. at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Donations will be given to the Chavez family.

Those who would like to donate to help the family should make checks payable to the Officer Jose Ismael Chavez Memorial Fund.
