Thousands attend funeral for fallen Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez
Thousands gathered at the Pan American Center Sunday for the funeral of fallen Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.
Numerous public officials took the podium to express their condolences to the family, including New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, who addressed Chavez’s two young daughters directly.
“You should know that your daddy will be walking right along side you for the rest of your life as your guardian angel ,” Martinez said.
Before the funeral started, hundreds stood on the side of the road holding flags to welcome the eleven mile long procession, led by a hearse carrying Chavez’s body.
Chavez’s police unit was also on display and covered in flowers, flags and balloons.
“How could someone do it, how could someone kill an officer? I don’t know, (I’m) speechless ,” onlooker Priscilla Tovar said.
Once inside, officers wiped away tears, others held hands as music played. Las Cruces Bishop Oscar Cantu spoke of Chavez’s final moments .
“(He said) tell my mother that I love her. Tell my family that I love them. When his voice should not have been audible he spoke clear and audible words of love ,” Cantu said.
