a hiker calls for help from the franklins overnight. it’s what he did next — that rescuers urge other hikers to avoid doing — especially during this time of year. / our back-to-school coverage continues this morning. we take a look at the access students have to technology — and if the money invested is paying off. and happening today—more than 200 employers are expected to fill the convention center today for an annual job fair. details in a live report. a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. scattered thunderstorms can be expected again today across the area, though less numerous west of the rio grande. a few of the storms will produce heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts and hail. storms will be more isolated on wednesday, then increase in coverage again thursday into the weekend. somewhat drier and hotter weather could be in store for next week. to ’round the clock coverage… a hiker calls for help from the franklin mountains overnight. emergency crews went to mammoth rock at the top of the ron coleman trail just after 9-p.m. this is new video of the rescue effort . the fire department tells abc-7 a 22-year old man was running out of battery on his cell phone and called for help. by the time search and rescue crews made it up the mountain, the hiker had already made it down by himself. / “he just made his way down th arroyo, which is very dangerous. if it had started raing there would have been flash floods there. it’s not the trail so there’s big boulders and gravel. but he did make it down safely.” the man was not injured. the search and rescue teams made it down the mountain an hour later. good morning el paso is your back- to-school headquarters. and this morning — we look at some of the technology local school districts are giving to their students. it’s replacing the numerous textbooks we all had to stuff into backpacks. today — children may need only one laptop. as part of our back-to-school series this week, abc-7’s jerry najera looks at the way computers have already transformed your child’s classroom. “the purpose of the laptop is t support the idea of active learning” steve stiles –chie technology officer for episd explains just what active learning is. “active learning means that the students is involved in his or her own learning it’s not simply receiving information and regurgitating it you participate in your education” stiles says projec based learning is now becoming the normal for students with laptops “we have collaboration between students and between teacher and student” stiles tells abc-7 classroms aren’t just about a teacher standing infront a board giving out information now they have to look for it “it’s students working small groups in a classroom presenting sharing and alike, all of that is supported by a laptop” the process of having students explore and find facts stiles says adds to the education. “an engaged studen is learning more that’s simply a fact” on top of the valuable tool helping for education the district says they save money “if you’re student you can have eight textbooks you have all eight text books on that device that’s eight textbooks we are not buying” “they are going to g into college into trade into a job into anything..in this day in age they are going to be using devices” jerry najera abc-7. episd students are expected to keep their laptpots throughout all four years of high school. and just like with books, if a student losses a laptop they are held responsible and have to pay for the cost. and the el paso school district isn’t alone. sisd tells us they’ve purchased approximately 6- thousand laptops for students. it was an exciting first day of school for students in clint i-s-d. take a look at this… every student in the district got to unbox a new ipad, chromebook or laptop. it’s part of a learning initiative to improve access to technology for all students. clint i-s-d officials say teachers have been training during the summer with the devices. the district invested nearly three million dollars in the devices. pre-k and kinder students get ipads. first thru 11th grade gets chromebooks, and seniors get lenovo laptops: “we hope that the training that we do with our students, that front loading, that positive atmosphere, that they’re going to be very careful with them and we think that they will take care of them.” training sessions for the devices are also being offered to parents. happening today- an opportunity you don’t want to miss if you are looking for a job. we’re talking about southwest university’s annual job fair. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live … denise?
