Juan Gabriel’s ashes arrive in Juarez

UPDATE:

Music icon Juan Gabriel’s ashes have arrived in Ciudad Juarez, and will be taken to Mexico City for a celebration of his life on Monday.

The ashes were placed in an urn on top of a hearse with flowers surrounding it.

Thousands lined up along the streets in El Paso and Juarez to see his remains arrive home.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The ashes of Juan Gabriel will arrive in El Paso on Saturday before they are taken to Juarez via the Santa Fe bridge, El Diario De Juarez and Televisa reported Thursday.

Details of Juan Gabriel’s funeral were released during a news conference by Chihuahua’s governor this morning, the newspaper reported, adding that the ashes will go to Juan Gabriel’s home along Avenida 16 de Septiembre by 5 p.m.

The bishop of Juarez, Jose Guadalupe Torres, will celebrate Mass at 8 p.m. outside the singer’s house before Torres will join the family inside the house to place the singer’s ashes by the fireplace.

The governor also said there will be a festive tribute outside the home featuring music.

Juan Gabriel’s home will be a permanent museum, El Diario reported. The singer has apparently been gathering a sizeable number of his possessions over the past three years to make the museum possible.

Juarez Mayor Javier Gonzalez Mocken said city council will officially declare Juan Gabriel “Favorite Son” as a show of gratitude for his artistic contributions and love for the city that saw him grow as an artist, the newspaper reported.

Juan Gabriel died of a heart attack in Los Angeles on Sunday, hours before he was expected to perform at the Don Haskins Center.
