Police: Texas man entered hospital with gun aimed at infant

Authorities south of Dallas say a man walked into a hospital emergency room with a handgun pointed at his infant daughter, prompting a lockdown and standoff with police.

The incident generated a broad police response early Saturday evening to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Waxahachie.

Police say 32-year-old Lorenzo Zarate of Austin gave the infant to a hospital worker but the standoff ensued when officers arrived. A police negotiator eventually convinced Zarate to surrender.

Both the infant and another child Zarate had in his vehicle were not harmed.

He was being held Sunday at the Ellis County jails on charges that include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Online jail records did not indicate whether he has an attorney to comment on the charges.
