shooting just a few hours from here… as classes are now set to resume. and a glimpse at the future of transportation – that could be coming to the borderland in just a few years. and in stormtrack weather, stephen! this is all the news you need to start your saturday, september 10th. abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend” starts right now the borderland waking up to a very windy start to the weekend. the national weather service issuing a wind advisory until 2 this afternoon. this is video shot just a few minutes ago on mesa street in west el paso. you can see just how strong those gusts are… good morning and thank you for joing us… i’m andrew j. polk. let’s get straight to stormtrack weather! stormtrack meteorologist stephen decatur is live with how strong we can expect so see those gusts this morning: active weather can be expected this forecast period. well start out with a vigorous backdoor front pushing southwestward across the cwa this morning. a wind advisory is in effect for zones containing western slopes, mainly along and east of rio grande. could get windy along the i-10 corridor west of las cruces as well. max temps will be down from yesterday, ranging from 15 degrees cooler far east to 7 degrees cooler toward the az border. a few storms are possible this afternoon f-b-i… and the suspect is still on the loose. we first brought you this as breaking news on abc-7 at 5. it happened around 5 at the united bank on mesa hills. that’s near morehead middle school. a helicopter circled above while police investigated. el paso police later tweeted that the case is being handled by the f-b-i. we’ll continue to update you as more information comes in. police are still searching for the person who shot and killed a woman at a northeast home. officers responded to the 86-hundred block of guadalupe drive yesterday just after two in the morning. when they arrived they found a 27-year-old woman dead, with several gunshot wounds to her body. police say children were also in the home when the shooting happened. our round the clock news crew was there…. as officers with bulletproof vest surrounded the home — and worried neighbors waited outside. it’s unclear how many kids were in the home and if the woman was their mother. as for the suspect — police did not have a description. if you have any information, call the el paso police department at 832- 4400. or to remain anonymous, call crime stoppers at 566-8477. police arrest a 25 year old man after he alleegdly robbed three businesses in less than a week. police say last sunday, lorenzo garcia entered the metro p-c-s store on mesa– showed his gun to the employee, and took off with some money. two days later– police say garcia did the same thing — but this time with a knife at the metro pcs on north desert. last friday morning, garcia allegedly then robbed the wing daddy’s restaurant on lee trevino. police arrested sanchez on wednesday. police say his mugshot will be released as soon as the investigation wraps up. investigators are still searching for a possible motive as to why a 14 year old girl shot a classmate… she didn’t even know. it happened thursday morning in alpine, texas … about 2-hundred miles southeast of el paso. the sheriff’s office says a 14- year-old girl who shot another girl, then took her own life. abc-7 was at the scene just a few hours later as police cars and caution tape surrounded the high school. officials say the victim of the shooting is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. classes resume monday morning for the 3 alpine schools — the classes were cancelled yesterday because of the shooting. the superintendent says counselors and clergy will be available when students return to campus. a community forum for parents and residents has been scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at the alpine civic center. happening todoay — the alamogordo police officer who was shot and killed will be laid to rest. clint corvinas was killed a week ago while chasing a wanted fugitive. the suspect who shot corvinus was also killed by another police officer. services will be held this morning at 10 at the tays center, on the 24-hundred block of scenic drive in alamogordo. a former customs and border protection officer recieves a sentence of more than 7 years in prison. the is video of the officer: lawrence madrid last summer as he was walked to courth when first facing criminal charges. madrid allowed immigrants to cross illegaly in exchange for money. yesterday, the 54- year-old was convicted of conspiracy to commit alien smuggling. madrid’s wife, odet, arranged the deals. madrid would waive them through the pedestrian lanes of el paso’s ports of entry while working for c-b-p. odet madrid is also facing charges but we’re told she’s now a fugitive. a middle finger to mexicans. that’s what one utep professor is calling a proposed textbook– titled “mexican american heritage” other historians and professors say it incorrectly portrays mexican americans. we spoke with dr. josemaria herrera — who read through passages within the digital copy. one passage states that mexicans are viewed as lazy — and that the view stemmed from quote ” cultural attitude of “mana” or “tomorrow,” w it came to high-gear production”. without presenting data, the book claims mexican workers had a tendency to skip work on mondays and drink on the job. dr. herrera described says the book is downright racist. but the publisher, momentum instruction, disagrees: “it was only presented as a controversial stereotype that was being used against mexican americans that they had to overcome and i do know one of the things that book did have an intention was not to white wash history, but to put all of the good, the bad, all of the areas of having to overcomes issues that mexican americans have had to face.” the texas education agency says it was the only book submitted for the course. if approved by the board of education, it could hit high school classrooms next year. although districts can opt out of using it if they choose to do so. we’re about two months away from election day. and the el paso school district is doing what it can to inform voters about the upcoming bond election. district officials tell us they will be sending out mailouts, emails, and even do livestreaming of community meetings. the bond is the first one proposed in nine years for the district. at 668- million, it is the largest in el paso history. that’s why they say they’re trying their hardest to inform voters anyway they can: “we have more at this time more than 60 community meetings scheduled across the district and continue to add to the calendar. any group that would like for us to come and present to them, we will future of freight transportation could arrive in the borderland in as soon as 2 years. the texas a&m transportation institute says it has developed a freight shuttle system to improve the way the country transports goods. the international system would cost about 250 million dollars and would: cut pollution… decrease wait times… and increase security. this animation shows how a rail system would carry the truck’s trailer across the international border. essentially giving customers their own private lane across the border. “we can improve the productivit of trucking companies if they circulate domestically and don’t attempt to cross the border and rely on the freight shuttle to bring the goods across the border to the other side.” before construction begins the cross-border project would the cross-border project would require a presidential permit to build the transportation system. tomorrow is the 15th anniversary of a day marked by tragedy in the u-s. commemoration ceremonies have begun throughout the city — as we remember the september 11th attacks. “america, god mend thine ev’r flaw” our crews stopped by the centennial plaza at utep this morning for its ceremony — as the utep concert chorale sang. the event paid tribute to the american flag and nearly 3- thousand people who died. the featured speaker was lt. john schneider. he was a n-y-p-d officer and one of the first responders that fateful day. and from college students… to students who weren’t even born. lundy elementary school in west el paso wants the younger generation to learn about the lives lost during the 9-11 terrorist attacks. it’s a tragedy the organizers and the parents teacher association wants students to know more about. they, along with local businesses put together a picninc. hundreds attended the event that had many activities for the children. students throughout the socorro school district also paid tribute to the victims of the attacks. rallies were held at different schools, students showed their patriotism by holding flags and singing patriotic songs. we have a slideshow of all the events on our website, at kvia.com. the owner of a san antonio mattress store has closed up shop — after making a tasteless ad promoting a 9-11 sale. “store wide sale all day long whoa… screams…” the online ad for ‘miracle mattress’ — featured a woman screaming as two towers of mattresses topple. almost immediately, there was backlash and outrage over it. in a statement posted on social media, owner mike bonanno said the store “will be closed indefinitely.” the other owne later admitted the ad was a stupid idea — and she hopes that people forgive them for what they did. the rumor mill has been working overtime in northeast el paso. word is — a popular retailer is looking to open a store in a new shopping center. abc-seven’s stephanie valle got to the bottom of the gossip: the ground has been leveled — parking lot lighting, installed — but construction on the new shopping center in northeast el paso hasn’t begun. “tell me again, who’s coming? that isn’t keeping residents from forming their own ideas of who the main tenant will be. “have you heard about this? “yes, i have. “somebody said — i’m only goin by what they said, that’s what they were going to put a target there.” “that it was going to come over here to the northeast over by the mcdonalds’ over there. on mccombs.” “i’ve not heard that, but i would like to see it.” “there are already signs posted proclaiming which shops and restaurants are coming to this property. there’s a carl’s jr. coming soon, there’s also a sign saying taco bell is coming soon. but what’s not here is a sign saying target is coming soon.” that’s because target isn’t opening a new store here. the retailer’s spokeswoman told me — “there aren’t plans for a new store at this time in that area” — bu that target’s “real estat team continually looks for new store locations.” “see, you guys shouldn’t have said nothing. they jinxed it.” disappointment for these northeast shoppers — “i wish there was one coming. but it’s mixed with a hope that more options are on the horizon. “hey. tell them we need an oliv garden too. and a red lobster at that, too.” “they need to look at what’ happening in these stores. … this is not just a hit-and-miss. you build it and they will come.” maybe just not right
