Suspect in Texas judge shooting indicted in conspiracy case
Federal prosecutors say a suspect in the 2015 shooting of a Texas judge outside her home has been indicted on racketeering charges allegedly related to the attack.
An indictment unsealed Friday accuses 28-year-old Chimene Hamilton Onyeri of buying gloves, clothes and a hotel room with stolen money in November before state District Judge Julie Kocurek of Austin was shot Nov. 6.
Kocurek was wounded and has since returned to work.
Onyeri hasn’t been charged in the shooting but has been in jail since May. Prosecutors have referred to Onyeri as the lone suspect. His attorney didn’t immediately return a phone message Friday.
The U.S. Justice Department said in a statement that Onyeri thought the judge was going to send him to prison over a 2012 larceny charge.
