Man killed in Berino; alleged gunman in custody

Detectives with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the shooting death of a 59-year-old man.

Deputies were dispatched to a field off N.M. 478 in Berino at about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim had allegedly suffered at least one gunshot wound to the torso.

A second man, who deputies suspect is the alleged shooter, was seen leaving the area in a vehicle later abandoned on a ditch.

With the help of Las Cruces Police Department K-9 units, U.S. Border Patrol agents and Anthony police officers, deputies were able to locate the suspect.

The man allegedly tried to hide in a field about a mile from the crime scene, investigators said. He was taken into custody and transported to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department for questioning.

The names of both men are expected to be released Thursday morning, pending notification of family and initial interviews.
