UPDATE: Bliss soldiers being held in confinement in San Antonio

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested two Fort Bliss soldiers Thursday morning, federal law enforcement officials told ABC-7.

The soldiers, identified as 19-year-old Marco Antonio Nava and 25-year-old Joseph Edmond Cleveland, were indicted in federal court on charges of smuggling undocumented immigrants into the U.S.

On June 19, 2016, Border Patrol agents at the checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas detained the two soldiers as they allegedly tried to smuggle two female immigrants.

Nava and Cleveland were allegedly taking the women to Houston, where they were going to be paid for smuggling the women.

The soldiers had been held at Fort Bliss while a grand jury returned an indictment. They are currently being held in confinement in San Antonio, Texas.

The soldiers are expected to be tried in Houston, officials said.

Post Officials said Nava was a private first class assigned to the 377 Transportation Company for the 1st Armored Division. He was been awarded an army service ribbon.

Edmond was a specialist also with the 377 Transportation Company. Previous awards included the army achievement medal, army good conduct medal, army service ribbon, national defense service meda., and a global war on terrorism medal.

Officials said the legal process for a solider facing criminal charges in a civilian court is the same as for any other civilian.

Generally, soldiers in civilian confinement awaiting civilian trial are not entitled to pay.

Soldiers are entitled to military counsel when facing trial by court-martial. They are not entitled to detailed military counsel when facing criminal trial by civilian authorities.
