El Paso couple with unique connection to World Series after Game 3 proposal

There are Chicago Cubs fans all over the country, including right here in the Borderland. For one fan in particular, win or lose, this will be a world series she’ll never forget.

“You know, we came up with – I had some crazy idea on Saturday after they won,” said Christopher Lopez, now engaged to Diane Estrada. “She’s a big Cubbies fan, so I said ‘No, I have to do something different.'”

And different he did. Lopez booked last-minute trip with his then-girlfriend Estrada to chicago to catch Game 3 of the World Series at Wrigley Field.

“And it took off from there,” Lopez said. “I had a lot of help, friends near and far.”

“The crowd was epic,” Estrada said. “It’s a once in a lifetime kind of thing for a world series, for someone who grew up with baseball. And it was neat. And I turned around and another surprise. So surprise number one and shock number two!”

She had no idea what was coming as Lopez unfolded a banner to take a picture with in front of the stadium, in the tradition of ‘flying the W.’

“As he was undoing the poster, I thought we were getting ready to take a picture,” Estrada said. “I thought we were going to fly a ‘W’. It’s what they do for Chicago, for the Cubbies. So I was looking around, I was trying to take pictures of Wrigley Field, and I turn around and there’s my sign!”

The banner did indeed have a large “W” on it. And it formed the second word of “Diane Will you marry me?” She said yes, and Lopez even called in a favor to get the famous Wrigley Field sign to show the happy answer.

And even though their future is now tied to this series, when asked if there’s going to be issues if the Cubs don’t win:

“No,” Estrada said while laughing. “No, not at all.”

“We hope not,” Lopez said. “Let’s not make this another curse or something.”

Despite being down in the series, both Estrada and even Lopez, who is usually a Yankees fan, have high hopes for the Cubs.

“Just being there in itself was amazing. But I think they can pull it off. They really can. They are the better team,” Lopez said. “I think they can. And it’ll be a good comeback.”

They haven’t picked a date yet, but are considering a fall wedding. Perhaps a future baseball season.
