Man arrested at courthouse after authorities say he tried to bring a gun inside

The El Paso County Sheriff’s office arrested a man who they say tried to bring a gun into the El Paso County Courthouse on Tuesday.

According to the sheriff’s office, James Stewart, 60, tried to enter the courthouse through the third-floor checkpoint and when he placed his belongings in the X-ray machine, deputies noticed the weapon. Authorities say the gun and bullets were located.

No one was injured.

Stewart was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility for “places weapons prohibited.”

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind visitors to the El Paso County Courthouse: Upon entering the Courthouse, you will be required to go through a magnetometer. All briefcases, purses, and packages will be X-rayed by Sheriff’s Office deputies. You may be required to remove belts with large metal buckles.The following items are prohibited in the building: firearms, knives, scissors or any other sharp object or weapons.
