Police identify man killed while trying to cross freeway

The pedestrian killed late Sunday night on I-10 East was struck by multiple vehicles.

Fermin Calvillo, 54, was trying to cross the freeway in East El Paso near I-10 and Hawkins when he was struck by an SUV driven by 30-year-old Alex Lopez of San Elizario, police said.

Calvillo was then struck by other vehicles, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, police added.

Lopez remained at the scene. The investigation revealed the drivers of the other vehicles involved failed to stop and render aid.

Police said Calvillo should not have attempted to cross the lanes on the freeway, which was closed for several hours overnight while police investigated.
