Texas state psychiatrist gets 40 years for child sex assault

A former Texas state psychiatrist has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault of a child.

A jury in Austin levied the sentence Thursday, a day after convicting Charles Fischer on 11 felony counts.

Jurors convicted the 64-year-old Fischer after deliberating for nine hours over two days.

He was accused of having sex with five teens under his care from 2001 to 2005. A former neighbor also said he was 7 or 8 years old when Fischer molested him.

Fischer worked at Austin State Hospital before he was fired in 2011 over the allegations.

He had faced 17 felony counts. Fischer also was found guilty of indecency of a child by contact and indecency of a child by exposure.
