Toddler killed in Anthony Gap crash

New Mexico State Police say a crash on NM State Road 404 has turned deadly. The road is more commonly known as Anthony Gap, connecting Chaparral to Anthony.

The crash happened around 9 am Monday morning near mile marker 3. According to the investigation by state police, a Saturn was traveling eastbound when it attempted to pass another vehicle also going east. The Saturn entered the westbound lane but failed to complete the pass in time to avoid oncoming traffic. The Saturn crashed into a Ford SUV traveling westbound. A one-year-old girl who was in the Ford was fatally injured.

The driver of the Saturn is identified as 27-year-old Jessica Gonzalez of Anthony, NM. We are told she sustained moderate injuries in the crash and was transported to a hospital where she is listed in stable condition. The driver and a three-year-old child in the Ford both sustained moderate injuries in the crash and are also in stable condition at a hospital.

Police officers say no one in either vehicle appeared to have been using seat belts, and the two children were not properly restrained in car seats. The crash remains under investigation.
