BREAKING: UTEP legend Harry Flournoy has died

UTEP legend Harry Flournoy, who was a captain on the 1966 Texas Western College national championship team, had died.

The 1966 Texas Western College team was the first all African American starting line up in NCAA Division I history. Texas Western College later changed it’s name to UTEP.

Flournoy’s daughter tweeted this morning, “So many emotions…please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers! Rest In Paradise Father, Harry Flournoy Jr.”.

Flournoy’s death was also confirmed by Jeff Darby, with UTEP Communications and University Relations.

Flournoy is the second player to die from the famous 1966 national championship team, following Bobby Joe Hill. Coach Don Haskins died in 2008.

In 2006 the film Glory Road was released about the 1966 Championship team. Mehcad Brooks played Flournoy.

The family has asked to not speak with media during this difficult time.
