Woman, girl in critical condition after rollover on U.S. 54

A woman driving north on U.S. 54 made an “unsafe lane change” and collided with a transport bus, police said.

The collision happened at about 11:40 pm Monday near U.S. 54 and Stan Roberts in Northeast El Paso.

27-year-old Jane Rosales was driving a 2008 Dodge Avenger with two passengers: a 7-year-old girl and a 3-year-old girl.

At the same time, 31-year-old John Navarro was driving an MCI Transport Bus with a passenger identified by police as Jose Mendoza.

Police said Navarro was on the right lane on U.S. 54 when he noticed Rosales’ vehicle directly ahead, also on the right lane.

Navarro drove onto the left lane in an effort to drive around Rosales’ vehicle, police said. Rosales later drove onto the left lane without noticing the bus was now in that same lane and collided with the bus, police said.

The impact resulted in Rosales’ car rolling and coming to a stop in a median. Rosales and the 7-year-old girl in her car were rushed to University Medical Center with “serious life-threatening injuries,” police said.

Mendoza, the passenger in the transport bus; and the 3-year-old in the car with Rosales where transported to UMC with minor injuries, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said. No charges have been filed.
