Police report first traffic fatality of 2017 in El Paso

The pedestrian struck by a car while trying to cross the 1300 block of Zaragoza Friday, January 6th died as a result of his injuries Tuesday morning, police said.

Police said 54-year-old David Holden was driving a maroon 2004 Honda Civic north on Zaragoza as 51-year-old Edward Dwain Thomas attempted to cross the street.

Holden struck Thomas, who police was using a crosswalk, but “against the pedestrian control signal.”

The collision happened shortly before 11 pm. Thomas was transported to Del Sol Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries after more than 10 days in the hospital.

This is the first traffic fatality of the year compared to four at this same time in 2016. No charges have been filed.
