High school students set for a taste of the ‘UTEP experience’
High school students will soon have the opportunity to see what becoming a University of Texas at El Paso Miner is all about during Orange and Blue Day.
The event gives high school juniors and seniors a glimpse at the different programs of study, social organizations and opportunities available to them at UTEP.
Fernando Zambrana is a junior, and said that going to UTEP helped him come up with a clearer course of study.
“I was really excited because I wanted to go to UTEP, but I didn’t really know how to like, get the experience,” said Zambrana.
With all the options presented to him, Zambrana chose to study biology. “I want to be a doctor, so that would be the best route,” he said.
Zambrana was a prime example of what the university seeks to accomplish through Orange and Blue Day.
“We want students to come on campus and look around and feel like,’I belong here’,” said Michael Talamantes, UTEP director of admissions and recruitment.
UTEP programs such as business and engineering are highly ranked. Overall, the university is rated among the best for Hispanic students, and in the past it was a leader in social mobility, meaning students often raise their socioeconomic status.
“They’re able to come to the university, get a degree and then change their life,” said Talamantes.
While prospective Miners are busy figuring out how UTEP will help them reach their life goals, financial aid and admissions representatives will be available to guide parents.
Isabel Sanchez’s son is a graduate of the engineering school. Admittedly, she didn’t know much about the university aside from the Sun Bowl and Don Haskins. She recommends parents join in on the Miner spirit and get better acquainted.
“I found how welcoming, and how much they help the student and the parent,” said Sanchez.”If you feel comfortable you’ll talk to people, and you’ll be better informed.”
Orange and Blue Day is planned for February 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The UTEP band, cheerleaders and the Golddigger dance team will be performing at a pep rally.
“You see a whole bunch of UTEP spirit, a whole bunch of orange and blue, and just livelihood,” said Zambrana.
