NMSU names Brooke Atkinson as new head coach of women’s basketball team

Brooke Atkinson has been named as the new head coach of the NMSU women’s basketball team.

The university introduced Atkinson during a news conference Wednesday morning.

Atkinson was a former assistant at NMSU from 2003 to 2010 who then went on to be an assistant at Colorado State.

“Today is a very special day in my life,” said Atkinson, who began her coaching career almost a decade and a half ago with NMSU. “I’m beyond excited to be the new head coach at New Mexico State University…14 years ago New Mexico State gave me my first coaching opportunity. They took a chance on me.”

She will replace three-time reigning WAC Coach of the Year Mark Trakh, who guided the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons.

Trakh recently accepted the head coaching position with USC’s women’s basketball team, where he previously coached for five seasons.

Atkinson helped lead Colorado State to a 25-win campaign last year.

Some NMSU players said they were excited to see a woman take over the head coaching job.

“It’s inspiring knowing that there’s a lot of men coaches on the women’s side,” said guard Tonishia Childress. “And having a woman come in this year for us, it encourages us and let’s us know that that could be us.”
