May is Bike Month in El Paso

May is Bike Month in El Paso and it will be celebrated with events around the city for the entire family.

In August 2016, the City of El Paso implemented its Comprehensive Bike Plan that is expected to provide a roadmap for the city to create a network of bike infrastructure over the next decade.

The plan includes short term and long term goal to improve connectivity, promote safety and educate drivers.

ABC-7 talked with the city’s bike plan director, Alfredo Austin, who said the city currently has about 140 miles of existing roadways with bicycle infrastructure.

“The goal is to get to 1,100 miles of bike infrastructure,” Austin said.

Austin said the city is currently working to restore, repair and restripe bike lanes.

The city’s plan will also accommodate all users including motorists, pedestrians, mass transit users and bicyclists.

Projects that have already been completed include the Independence Drive, Viscount Boulevard and Riverbend Drive hike and bike trails.

The city is working with organizations like Velo Paso to include the community in upcoming projects.
