Affidavit: Murder suspects killed victim during pot deal in Northeast EP

Court documents obtained by ABC-7 state the man stabbed and killed in Northeast El Paso last week was selling marijuana to the men accused of murdering him.

Police arrested and charged two men with Capital Murder for the killing of 21-year-old Erik Deshaun Bertrand.

Gang unit officers arrested 27-year-old Cesar Rogelio Gonzalez the morning of Thursday May 4, 2017.

The US Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested 34-year-old Ruben Alvarado Thursday evening.

Bertrand was stabbed and killed near an apartment complex at 3334 Zion on May 2, 2017.

Police responded to a car crash with injuries just after 2 pm at the apartment complex.

Officers arrived to find Bertrand, the driver of the mid-size sedan, with a stab wound to his upper torso.

Bertrand was transported to University Medical Center, where he later died.

An investigation revealed the victim and two juveniles had gone to the apartment complex to meet a group of people.

Police said the groups got into a fight and Bertrand was stabbed. “The others involved in the altercation fled the scene,” police said in a news release.

Bertrand crashed into another vehicle inside the apartment complex as he tried to drive away to seek help, police said.

Police said the juveniles told police Bertrand went to the apartment complex to sell pot to Gonzalez and Alvarado.

Once at the parking lot, Gonzalez allegedly asked Bertrand to enter his pickup, the juveniles told police. Once inside the pickup, Bertrand got into a fight with Gonzalez and was stabbed in the upper torse, the witnesses said.

Bertrand exited the truck and ran back to his car. At that point, Gonzalez allegedly confronted the juveniles in an attempt to steal the marijuana, the complaint affidavit states.

The juveniles and the alleged murderers ran away from the scene. Police later found the juveniles, who allegedly identified Gonzalez and Alvarado in a lineup of suspects.

Under interrogation, Gonzalez allegedly told detectives he and Alvarado stabbed and killed Bertrand.

Gonzalez is charged with Capital Murder and is being held under a $1-million bond.

Alvarado is charged with Capital Murder, Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. He is being held on bonds totaling more than $1-million.
