UTEP Basketball: Guard Deon Barrett announces decision to transfer
UTEP guard Deon Barrett announced via Twitter Wednesday that he will not be returning to the Miners for his second season.
“I would like to start off by thanking coach Tim Floyd for giving me an opportunity to play here my freshman year,” began Barrett’s farewell note on Twitter. “After further evaluations and long talks with my family, I’ve decided to move forward and transfer from UTEP.”
Barrett played a little under 14 minutes per game in his freshman campaign. He averaged 3.4 points per contest last season, highlighted by a 25-point performance in December at New Mexico in which he hit seven three-pointers.
Before coming to UTEP, Barrett was a key contributor on a Lancaster team that won back-to-back state championships at the 5A level in Texas.
Barrett also thanked fans for their support in his message on Twitter.
“We had our ups and downs this season as a team, and the greatest fans I’ve seen stuck by us and gave us all the support we could ask for!” wrote Barrett.
Barrett is the third UTEP guard to announce he is leaving this offseason, joining Tim Cameron and Chris Barnes.
It was not immediately clear where Barrett intends to transfer.
