2 young men charged in auto burglary spree

Las Cruces police arrested two men suspected of burglarizing vehicles early Tuesday morning.

Benjamin Barela, 21; and Dominik Kevin Haines, 19, are both charged with two counts of auto burglary and conspiracy.

Police say at around 2:30 a.m. On Tuesday they were called to the 3000 block of Majestic Ridge after a resident saw the two men checking door handles on several vehicles in the neighborhood.

When officers arrived the two men took off running. They were arrested after a short chase.

Investigators learned that both men were checking door handles and burglarizing vehicles near a hotel on Avenida de Mesilla before driving to the Majestic Ridge neighborhood and doing the same thing.

Barela and Haines were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where they are being held without bond.
