$600K seized at Port of Entry, currency headed into Mexico

Customs and Border Protection officers seized $689,506 allegedly being smuggled into Mexico from the US.

The money was seized Sunday at the Ysleta Port of Entry. CBP officials said the money was hidden in a vehicle heading south into Mexico.

The 28-year-old male driver, from Ciudad Juarez, initially did not declare any currency totaling more than $10,000, weapons or ammunition. After being selected secondary exam, CBP officers found the money inside a speaker box.

CBP agents turned the driver over to Homeland Security Investigations officials. He is facing charges, officials said.

Beverly Good, U.S. Customs and Border Protection El Paso Port Director, said that CBP agents are constantly checking cars traveling south for any potential contraband. Good said the agents’ diligence paid off.

“CBP officers are checking southbound traffic everyday trying to stop guns, ammunition and unreported currency from being smuggled out of the country. Their diligence paid off in this enforcement action,” Good said. “There is no limit to how much currency travelers can import or export however under U.S. law they must report amounts exceeding $10,000 to CBP at the time of the arrival or departure. Travelers who do not follow federal currency reporting requirements run the risk of losing their currency and may potentially face criminal charges.”
