Las Cruces man accused of trying to strangle ex-girlfriend

A Las Cruces man is being held without bond after allegedly trying to strangle his ex-girlfriend.

Police said 28-year-old Andres Borrego was having drinks with the victim when they got into an argument at a local brewery.

The couple left to Borrego’s apartment, where the argument allegedly became physical.

Borrego is suspected of overpowering the 22-year-old woman and choking her until she lost consciousness. The woman told police she was unconscious for some time and regained consciousness when Borrego allegedly slapped her.

LCPD says the woman left the apartment and sought help from a friend, and subsequently police. Police say she had obvious signs of injury consistent with being choked in the manner she described.

Borrego was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center on assault charges.
