Burges graduate will head to Australia for the Down Under Bowl

After deciding to attend UTEP for engineering rather than going to a different college to continue playing football, it looked as though recent Burges graduate, Cruz Jacobo, had played his last game ever. However, Jacobo , who plays defensive end, offensive tackle and tight end, will be extending his football career as he represents the United States football team in Australia at the Down Under Bowl this summer. According to Jacobo, he and others are selected for the Down Under Bowl as people from the league send out invites to play in camps to players their Sophomore season. The process continues until they invite high school senior players for the opportunity to represent their country as they play on the Coast of Australia. Jacobo and the rest of the United States team will face off against other teams around the world. He won’t just represent the United States while there as he will also represent the borderland as the only player from El Paso. “It’s a lot of weight on my shoulders, but hopefully I can bring (the El Paso) name out,” Jacobo said. This opportunity is very exciting for Jacobo who has never been to a foreign country other than Mexico. “It’s going to be a new experience and it’s going to be fun,” Jacobo said. While Jacobo will finally visit another foreign country and make friends with people all across the United States and the world, he is most excited about something else. “I love the ocean, I love swimming,” Jacobo said. Jacobo leaves to Australia on Sunday, June 25 and the Down Under Bowl games will begin in July.
