El Pasoans will be able to light fireworks out in the County, no ban in place
El Pasoans will be able to light fireworks on the Fourth of July in unincorporated areas of the county.
The county is able to ban fireworks if the Keetch-Bryan Drought Index reaches 575 before June 15th. For the second straight year, the index was below that threshold in the county.
County Commissioners unanimously approved a motion on Monday to close down several streets in Far East El Paso County on Fourth of July.
“The county’s much better prepared to deal with the expected volume of people from a public safety perspective, and also afterwards working with the vendors to make sure that a lot of the trash is picked up afterward,” county commissioner Vince Perez said.
This decision comes after many neighborhood associations throughout unincorporated areas requested the closures to keep the neighborhoods clean and safe during the holiday.
The road closures are:
Stansbury Street (at the end of the street leading to the desert area)
Paseo Del Este (just east of Southview Road)
Flager Road (1.7 miles north of Montana)
Krag Street (near intersection of Marvin Lane)
Vista Del Este (near intersection of Marvin Lane)
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office also has the authority to shutdown additional streets if they feel there is a potential for danger.
“It creates a very dangerous environment and these street closures are just one of the steps that we can take to help protect the residential areas of the county that are most at risk when fireworks are popped off,” Perez said.
Fireworks are still banned within city limits of El Paso, Vinton Horizon, San Elizario and Clint.
