NMSU soccer stuns UTEP in overtime to begin season
UTEP and New Mexico State played a thrilling season-opener on Friday night in Las Cruces that resulted in a bit of history for the Aggies.
Entering the night, UTEP led the all-time series 6-0, and was coming off a 5-0 victory in the last meeting in 2016.
But NMSU would not let its fans down at home.
UTEP opened the scoring in the first half when Vic Bohdan delivered a beautiful cross to Danielle Carreon right in front of goal for an easy tap-in and an early 1-0 lead.
NMSU fans had to wait for the equalizer, but it finally came in the 87th minute courtesy of Devin Hart. Audriana Chavez assisted on the goal, but that would not be the last we heard from her.
The game eventually went to a second overtime period. In the extra session, Chavez made a brilliant run and Aileen Galicia was able to hit her for the game-winning goal to give the Aggies their first win in the series.
“It’s the first time in our history that we’ve beaten UTEP, and we’re happy to be the first team to be able to do it,” NMSU head coach Freddy Delgado said. “You can only have so many firsts in your program, and I think this group is very deserving to get that first win.”
NMSU will next travel to play at Northern Illinois on Sunday, while UTEP will return home to host Abilene Christian at University Field at 1 p.m. MST.
