NMSU falls on the road at Appalachian State
The New Mexico State Aggies twice led in the fourth quarter by seven, but Appalachian State exploded late in the game to secure a 45-31 victory.
The Mountaineers scored 28 of their 45 points in the fourth to rally for their second win in as many games in Sun Belt play. Meanwhile, the Aggies fell to 0-2 in conference play and 2-4 overall.
Appalachian State scored the final 21 points of the game in about a seven-minute span to walk away with a win.
The teams combined to score 42 points in the fourth quarter after combining for just three points in the third.
NMSU was doomed by six turnovers – all six of which were interceptions thrown by starting quarterback Tyler Rogers.
Rogers did record 356 yards passing and three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing), but Appalachian State managed to score 31 points off his six interceptions.
NMSU also had trouble containing the rushing attack of the Mountaineers. Appalachian State rushed 38 times for 350 yards – an average of 9.2 yards per rushing attempt. They also tallied five touchdowns on the ground.
NMSU will look to get its first win in conference play next week at winless Georgia Southern.
