EPFD: ‘Excellent’ response to free vaccine program for residents

A free health program for Borderland residents is proving to be successful, according to the El Paso Fire Department.

Vaccines for Health offers several monthly opportunities for residents who are uninsured or on medicaid to receive free vaccines and health screenings.

The programs serves those who are 18 and older in El Paso and Hudspeth counties.

“The response has been excellent,” said Annica Chavez, infection control nurse for the El Paso Fire Department.

Chavez said the clinic typically sees an abundance of visitors of all ages.

Services include flu vaccines, pneumonia vaccines for those 65 or older, blood pressure and glucose screenings.

“It’s very important that people come and get the flu shot,” said Jesus Gonzalez. Gonzalez has health insurance, but said the clinic is very convenient.

The El Paso Fire Department said the the goal of the program is to increase the wellness of the community.

With the flu season in full swing, Chavez said they want to decrease the amount of flu cases in the community.

The next opportunity is on Wednesday, November 15 at the EPFD Safety, Health Outreach Center located at 5415 Trowbridge Dr. from 1 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The clinic will also be open on Wednesday, November 29.
