Subject involved in 6-hour SWAT standoff in West El Paso arrested, identified

Police officers armed with rifles and the SWAT team arrested a man who barricaded himself in a West El Paso neighborhood Thursday following a six-hour standoff.

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety said known gang member Luis Bañuelos, 24, was arrested around 7:30 p.m. for multiple outstanding felony warrants for engaging activity and manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.

The incident began around 1:30 p.m. Thursday in a neighborhood along Redd Rd and Maya.

Sergeant Moises Vasquez said the criminal investigation division of public safety was serving an arrest warrant on Bañuelos. He said Bañuelos became uncooperative and barricaded himself inside the home.

ABC-7’s photographer reported police were using a megaphone to reach out to Bañuelos, asking the man to come out of the house with his hands up.

Our photographer also reported a helicopter hovering above the area and police snipers atop rooftops with their rifles pointed at the home where the suspect was allegedly hiding.

Officials said Bañuelos was also found to have several active warrants through the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Bañuelos will be transported and booked into the El Paso County Jail.

No injuries were reported during this incident.
