UTEP broadcaster Jon Teicher honored with Chris Schenkel Award

UTEP broadcaster Jon Teicher shared the stage with the likes of Peyton Manning and Marshall Faulk Tuesday night at the New York Hilton Midtown hotel.

Teicher was honored as the 2017 Chris Schenkel Award recipient at the National Football Foundation’s annual awards dinner.

The Chris Schenkel Award is given to one broadcaster annually who has had a distinguished career calling college football games with primarily one university.

Also honored at the dinner was the 2017 College Football Hall of Fame class. That class includes ten players and three coaches. Among the inductees were Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning, San Diego State running back Marshall Faulk, UNM linebacker Brian Urlacher, former player and coach Steve Spurrier, and Texas offensive tackle Bob McKay.

Teicher was introduced by ESPN’s Joe Tessitore after a video about Teicher’s time at UTEP was shown. Teicher then stood and received a warm ovation from the crowd.

The Detroit native joined UTEP in 1981 and will soon be entering his 37th year calling UTEP athletics. Teicher is known to many as simply “The Voice of the Miners.”

He also serves as UTEP’s Assistant Athletics Director for Broadcasting.

In addition to his time in the booth calling UTEP games, Teicher served one season as the voice of the NMSU Aggies and also served two separate four-year stints broadcasting El Paso Diablos baseball games.
