La Fe luminarias light up Scenic Drive
On Saturday evening Scenic Drive got a splash of Christmas cheer.
Centro De Salud Familiar La Fe held it’s annual luminaria lighting.
“Our first wave of volunteers begins coming in shortly after dawn,” said Estela Reyes, Centro De Salud Familiar La Fe spokeswoman.
Reyes said La Fe staff and family members fill the bags with sand atop scenic drive.
“Their children are ready to jump on a two ton mound of sand to start filling the luminaria bags,” Reyes said.
When all is said and done more than 4,000 luminarias will sit along Scenic Drive.
“This goes back 26 year,” Reyes said.
Once everything is ready, the candles are lit and drivers are treated to a once-a-year spectacular view.
La Fe said the luminarias represent the hope that every El Paso child and family receives peace, health, quality housing, education, and social justice in the new year.
“Beautiful, beautiful,” one passer by said.
Drivers were also treated to a live nativity scene and Santa Claus with his elves.
“Have you guys been good? Are you cutting grass washing dishes?” Santa asked some children
La Fe staff accepted canned foods and monetary donations. They in turn provide food baskets for those in need.
“There is no greater blessing than to be able to knock on someones door and when they look at you and the hope in their eyes … nothing tops that feeling,” Reyes said.
La Fe will continue to take donations through the holidays to help local families in need.
La Fe is located at 700 South Ochoa Street.
