Mesilla park man arrested after allegedly firing shots inside home

A Mesilla Park man was arrested by Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies after reports of gunshots coming from his home.

Deputies were sent to the 9000 block of Clovis Road just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2017 after neighbors called 911 to report hearing gunshots coming from inside the man’s home. When Deputies arrived at the home of Steven Ortega, 49, they heard a gunshot after they knocked on the door.

Ortega opened the door but reportedly refused to show his hands. A small scuffle ensued and Ortega was tased before being taken into custody. Deputies recovered a rifle and several spent shell casings inside the home.

Ortega was arrested and transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of resisting or obstructing and negligent use of a deadly weapon.

He was released on his own recognizance the following day.
