DPS: Drunk driver injured during high-speed chase on I-10
The accused drunk driver who allegedly led state police officers on a high-speed chase was injured after crashing into the back of a tractor trailer, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said Monday.
At 11:30 pm Sunday, a state police officer attempted to pull over 41-year-old Benny Sandoval, of Vado, New Mexico. Police said Sandoval was driving a Ford Mustang and speeding on I-10 West near MM 5.
Sandoval allegedly failed to stop and began evading law enforcement, police said. Sandoval later crashed into the rear of a truck tractor on I-10 West near MM 2.
Sandoval and his passenger were taken to University Medical Center for injuries sustained during the crash, police said.
Sandoval is being charged with evading in a motor vehicle, DWI and possession of a controlled substance.
DPS identified the passenger in Sandoval’s vehicle as 28-year-old Yosga Bryan Esparza of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Esparza is being charged with possession of a controlled substance.
DPS said Esparza was also found to have an active warrant for his arrest through the U.S. Marshal’s office. The arrest photos for both men have yet to be released.
