EPPD: Drunk driver tried walking away from officer, resisted arrest

A man arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of driving while intoxicated allegedly tried walking away from an officer as he was being detained, El Paso Police said.

Police charged Ramon Mercado, 28, with his second DWI offense in addition to evading arrest or detention.

Police said Mercado was exiting a parking lot in a 2011 GMC Sierra at 1441 Zaragoza. Mercado later pulled into closed business on the 1400 block of Bessemer.

While at that location, a police officer who approached Mercado allegedly found Mercado to be intoxicated.

“While placing Mercado under arrest, he began to walk away from the officer and physically resisted arrest,” a police news release states.

Mercado was jailed on a $46,000 bond.
