Man convicted, sentenced in cold case murder
After more than 14 years, a cold case murder has been solved and the accused is now convicted and serving time behind bars.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced on Feb. 2 that Carlos Miguel Rodriquez Urquidi was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison in connection to the death of Ignacio Hernandez.
According to the ABC-7 archive, Hernandez, 46, was found stabbed to death at his house on the 8000 block of Coach Road in Westway near Canutillo in January of 2004.
In August of the same year, Sheriff’s officials said they were looking for Rodriquez Urquidi, who was 22 years of age at the time. According to a news release issued Feb. 2, Sheriff’s officials identified Rodriquez Urquidi as an associate of Hernandez.
ABC-7 reported in 2006 and 2011 that Rodriquez Urquidi had fled to Mexico and the trail had gone cold. Sheriff’s officials said in the news release that detectives had obtained a warrant of arrest, and worked with the El Paso County District Attorney Office to enter into what’s called an “article IV prosecution agreement” with Mexico. The article stated that in the event that Urguidi was arrested in Mexico, he would stand trial there for crimes committed in a foreign country.
The sheriff’s office said that Mexican authorities found Rodriquez Urquidi and he was taken into custody. He was tried for murder and sentenced in Nov. 2017.
