Shaun White wins America’s 100th Winter Olympics gold
Shaun White had the final word when it came to the snowboard halfpipe final at the PyeongChang Olympics and he came up golden.
The four-time Olympian took the lead after the first of three runs with a score of 94.25, but lost that lead to Japan’s Ayumu Hirano’s second run score of 95.25 after falling on his own second run.
The last rider to drop into the halfpipe on all three runs as the event’s top qualifier, White capped off the competition with a third run that included back-to-back 1440s and was scored at 97.75 to win his third Olympic halfpipe gold.
White’s medal was the 100th all-time Winter Olympic gold medal for the United States.
Hirano won silver in the event, with Scotty James of Australia taking bronze.
Ben Ferguson, a 23-year-old from Bend, Oregon, finished fourth, while Chase Josey, 22, of Hailey, Idaho, was sixth and Jake Pates, a 19-year-old Boulder, Colorado, native, was eighth.
White, 31, bounced back from a disappointing performance that saw him leave Sochi without a medal four years ago.
The U.S. has now won all four snowboard events so far the PyeongChang Games, with Red Gerard and Jamie Anderson winning slopestyle golds and Chloe Kim taking gold in the women’s halfpipe.
