YISD gathers largest team to compete in El Paso Marathon, half and 5K races
Come Sunday, thousands are expected to compete in the Michelob Ultra El Paso Marathon, half and 5L.
Among the individual competitors, many teams have formed to take part in the races.
This year, Ysleta Independent School District created one of the biggest teams with more than 200 participants.
“We would like to think that we set the standard and we aggressively pursue the gold standard in everything we do,” YISD Superintendent Xavier De La Torre said. “We’ve got phenomenal adult athletes. Some of them will be running the full marathon, and quite a number will run the half, but a majority of them will run the 5k.”
The district is calling the race The District Challenge.
“I think that it is really telling of Ysleta and how we are a family and a team and how we definitely take pride in everything we do,” school completion specialist Monica Bustillos said.
The district provided training programs for participants to follow. “I think that here at Ysleta we have a lot of people who know the true meaning of commitment,” Bustillos said. “I don’t think anyone signed up without realizing it is going to be a commitment on their part.”
The district says that attitude correlates to excellence into the classroom. “There was a sense of commitment and it was telling of what happens in the classroom,” Bustillos said. “You know the commitment we have to our students, pupils and parents is everything we do to make sure we succeed together. “
Good luck to the YISD participants!
The race is scheduled for Sunday.
