Las Cruces man convicted of sexually abusing girl

A Las Cruces man was convicted Thursday February, 15 for inappropriately touching a girl in 2014.

Police say 28-year-old Edgar Allen Martinez was taking care of the child when the abuse occurred. He was convicted of two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor under the age of 13.

“I am more than pleased with the outcome of this trial, and I genuinely hope that this verdict provides the victim in this case some much-needed closure. She and her family have suffered for too long. I applaud their courage, and will ask that Martinez be given the maximum sentence,” Doña Ana County District Attorney Mark D’Antonio said.

Martinez was also found guilty of one county of attempted criminal sexual penetration for forcing himself on a woman.

Martinez faces a maximum of 34 1/2 years in prison. Sentencing has not been scheduled.
