Las Cruces unveils Women Veterans Monument

Dozens gathered Saturday morning to honor women who have served in the military.

The city of Las Cruces and the United Military Women of the SouthWest officially dedicated the Women Veterans monument Saturday morning.

“When we got out of the service there wasn’t any big parties or anything…this is something altogether different. It’s just amazing,” explained Ida Mae Ellis, a World War II veteran

“It’s been a long time coming, and we want people to know that we served our nation also and we’re very proud of that,” said Karen Woods, a US Navy Veteran and the president of the United Military Women of the Southwest.

Hundreds showed up to Saturday’s unveiling where veterans took to the podium, speaking about their experiences as women in the armed forces. The memorial depicts statues surrounded by photographs, all of different women who have fought and served in the military.

This is one step, some said, on the path to equality.

“For me it’s compelling, but all I can say is ‘about time,” said Frances F. WIlliams, a Vietnam veteran and women’s rights advocate.

The work, according to these veterans, is not over yet.

“I hope what’s next is that we continue climbing and we break the glass ceiling once and for all for all women in all occupations,” Williams said.

“I think they should be recognized as women because they do, even in WWII so much work, and I loved every minute I was in,” said Ellis.
