Family and friends continue searching for missing El Paso veteran

Dozens of family members and friends continue the search for a Vietnam veteran, son, father and grandfather.

“He’s superman to me,” said Moises Ramirez, the nephew of Jose Margaro Gonzalez.

The veteran drives a white four-door Chevy Silverado with a primer top. He has a personalized purple heart recipient license plate that reads “GYM2PH.”

Gonzalez was last seen on March 4th. Some of his belongings have been located in Juarez, but his family told ABC-7 that Gonzalez does not have his diabetes medication.

“My uncle Margaro is all about family and friends,” Ramirez said. “He doesn’t know a stranger. Anyone of us have needed him in one way or another and he’s always been there.”

“He would give the shirt off his back,” said Dr. Carmen Aguilera-Goerner, a lifelong friend. “If you had a problem, he was always there for you.”

Gonzalez is a decorated army veteran who spent one year in Vietnam. His nephew said he has a bronze star and several purple hearts.

“We’re all brothers in arms,” Ramirez said. “We don’t leave anybody behind and I don’t intend to leave my uncle behind.”

Born in Mexico, Gonzalez made the United States his home, serving the democratic party for many years.

“He would never say no if you needed him for anything,” Aguilera-Goerner said. “He worked very hard for this community. He really was committed to El paso.”

Gonzalez would sometimes visit family in Juarez, but his family members say he would never leave without notifying someone of his location.

“I plead with you,” Ramirez said. “Please help us find him.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the El Paso or Juarez police departments.
