Rodney Terry introduced as UTEP head basketball coach
The UTEP Miners are ready to turn the page to the next chapter of their history.
Wednesday, UTEP introduced Rodney Terry as its next head coach for men’s basketball.
Terry was the head coach at Fresno State for the last 7 seasons, but his roots are in Texas.
Not only was Terry born in the Lone Star State, but he was an assistant coach under Rick Barnes when Barnes was the head coach at the University of Texas.
During Wednesday’s news conference, Terry said the reason he wanted to come to UTEP is because of the history of the basketball program and the support of the fans.
He mentioned that Glory Road, a film about the Texas Western (UTEP) 1966 championship team, is one of his favorite movies.
In 1966, Texas Western coach Don Haskins started 5 black players in the national championship game, something that had never been done before in division one men’s basketball.
“What those guys did and what that team did and the way it brought everyone together, it was so inspirational,” Terry said.
“I hope to at some point with my guys that we really take an appreciation for that and try to buy into that type of team and hopefully have those kind of results at some point.”
As for his style of play, Terry says while a fast playing team would be ideal, his team will be focused on defense.
“We know that every night if we can have that as our form of identity we’re going to have a chance to win championships,” Terry said.
Since it is currently spring break, Terry hasn’t had a chance to meet with the team.
He said he’s spoken with some players over the phone this week.
Terry hopes everyone of them decides to stay with the program.
“Just come in and give us a chance,” Terry said.
“Let’s roll up our sleeves and work together. Let’s try to get better and be excited for what we’re trying to do. Those guys get a chance to be the building blocks of it.”
