67-year-old woman hit, killed in Lower Valley; latest in spate of recent El Paso pedestrian deaths
A 67-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday evening at a busy Lower Valley intersection.
El Paso police on Tuesday identified the victim as Maria Elena Torres.
Investigators said Torres was crossing Americas Avenue at Socorro Road in the crosswalk when she was hit by an SUV making a turn. It happened about 6:45 p.m. Monday.
“Failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is a contributing factor in this case,” said Det. Diane Mack, but she did not indicate whether charges would be filed against the SUV driver, who she identified as 44-year-old Niobe Adame.
The incident marked the 52nd overall traffic death of the year, and was the latest in a spate of recent pedestrian fatalities across El Paso. It came on the same day that a 7-year-old girl struck and killed in a school crosswalk was laid to rest.
Alexa Barrera became the youngest of the pedestrian fatality victims last week on Oct. 9 when she was hit by an SUV while crossing the street in front of Robert’s Elementary School in west El Paso.
Other pedestrian deaths over the past month in the El Paso area include:
A 70-year-old woman died on Sept. 15 after being hit by a pickup truck while crossing at the street at the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Ysleta Lane in the Lower Valley.
