NMSU, Weir reach buyout agreement

Former New Mexico State University basketball coach Paul Weir has reached a financial settlement to pay the university $450,000 over the next seven years.

Weir had three years remaining in his contract when he left NMSU to become the head basketball coach at the University of New Mexico last year, triggering a buyout from his contract.

The first payment of the settlement is due May 1.

Weir was hired as NMSU’s men’s head basketball coach in April 2016 and won a program record 28 games and led the Aggies to a Western Athletic Championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament.

This past season at UNM, Weir led the Lobos to the Mountain West Tournament championship game.
